'Increased egg prices have a major impact on nutrition'
The cheapest source of protein for the public is eggs, and if its price increases, it will directly affect children and adults, says Professor Ananda Chandrasekara, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Nutrition Association.
He stated this in an inquiry conducted by mawbima.lk.
He emphasized that what should be done for the nutrition of the public is to launch a program that promotes the consumption of eggs.
The Chairman further said that when VAT is imposed on a source of nutrition like eggs, the public will not be tempted to think about protein and their main goal is to fill their stomachs.
He said that this will directly affect the nutrition of the society.
Meanwhile, Dr. Rukshan Bellana, Chairman of the Government Medical Officers' Association, said in an inquiry we conducted that taxing eggs is a death blow to malnourished children.
He said that this tax would greatly affect the health of patients with high protein food requirements and malnourished children.
In particular, the doctor emphasized that it was disgusting that the government, which had promised not to add VAT to essential foods, would also impose VAT on eggs.
According to the Ministry of Health's 2024 Nutrition Month data, Dr. Bellana further stated that 17% of underweight children are underweight.
